May 9, 2005 - Living a Simple Life
“For your obedience has become known to all. Therefore I am glad on your behalf; but I want you to be wise in what is good, and simple concerning evil.” – Romans 16:19
Does living a Christ like life mean that we are poor and sick? Does living for Christ mean that we do not have a job or live on noodles and vegetables? To live a simple life implies more than the amount of money you have, for rich people can be just as generous as poor people, though the statistics show that the lower income earners give more of their money than those with large bank accounts.
It is obedience that God looks for in His children, which seems to imply that those who are obedient will live “simple” lives concerning evil. They will be more concerned with what is good, rather that constantly exposing themselves to evil or temptation. There is a temptation to deny God when someone becomes rich, therefore, a higher calling is to be poor in spirit so that you might be rich in faith.
Living a simple life will draw us closer to God the Father and His Jesus Christ. The simplicity of obedience is profound. God’s intention for His children is one of good and not harm, therefore, to obey God makes good sense. His will is so good, that to refuse to obey is foolish.
Living a simple life doesn’t mean we go without money or food, it means that obedience is a higher calling than making money or eating. “Food is for the stomach and the stomach is for food, but God will do away with both of them. Yet the body is not for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body. (1 Corinthians 6:13; NASB)”
