Fear and Anxiety by Ernest Martinez
We all struggle in one way or another with fear and anxiety. Fear, in its natural form, helps us to recognize danger. But, as children of God, we are exhorted to live apart from fear. Anxious thoughts sometimes fill our hearts. We seem to lose control over our emotions and begin to allow our fear and anxieties dictate our actions. Listen carefully to the words of Proverbs 12:25: "Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, but a good word makes it glad." When we try to control our own destiny, we soon realize that we are really in control of very little, if anything at all. The Bible is clear: "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:6 - 7) When we understand the will of God, which to rest in grace (1 Peter 1:13) and to seek first God's kingdom and righteousness (Matthew 6:33), then we will understand God's promise to guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7).
Paul wrote to the Romans: "For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, 'Abba! Father!'" (Romans 8:15)
What a privilege to be given the "spirit of adoption" which allows us to cry out to God as our daddy. Turning over our fears and anxiety is a simple teaching, but it is a lifetime pursuit. The Bible says: "Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you." (1 Peter 5:6 - 7) He truly cares for us, and pours out His love in our hearts. The Bible says: "Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us." (Romans 5:5) As we live and walk in the love of God, our fears and anxieties are removed from our hearts and minds in fulfillment of God's word (Philippians 4:6 - 7).
1 John 4:18 declares: "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love." To be made perfect in love is to have a perfect life, a life free from fear. If you still have fear and anxiety, do not be too hard on yourself. As a matter of fact, don't even focus on yourself or your circumstances, but look to Jesus the Author and Finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). It is He who guards our hearts and minds. It is He who brings us peace. It is He who delivers us from the enemy's hand. It is He who gives us peace with the Father. It is He who sent the Holy Spirit to us who is our Comforter and Counselor. It is He; it is Jesus Christ our Lord! Amen.
