Fire Emblem has surprisingly and unarguably become one of Nintendo’s biggest franchises. And for good reason. Its strategic gameplay is simple, yet has tons of depth and complexity. And it was doing relationships long before Persona 5 made it popular. With that level of popularity though comes plenty of imitations. And at first sight, Lost Eidolons looked like just another one of those. Not long into the game however, and it becomes clear this isn’t just another Fire Emblem clone with a different skin. It’s a lovingly made, highly polished, tactical strategy game with surprisingly high production values that’s made for fans of the genre.Â
Lost Eidolons is set on the continent of Artemesia, formerly home to multiple nations but united into a single empire some years before the game’s events. However, the conquering Emperor Ludivictus has aged, corruption is now rife, and the empire is clearly on the wane. The game follows Eden, leader of a mercenary company based in the village of Lonetta in the former kingdom of Benerio. After taking on a mission to rescue a woman from a local lord, he soon gets wrapped up in a full-scale rebellion that spreads across the crumbling empire.
Enemies and allies will have different types of armor equipped, and these armors have different weaknesses to different weapon types in the game. For the weapons, you can wield a sword, axe, bow, grimoire, or spear, with each dealing more or less damage based on what armor you are going up against. Each unit you have can also equip a secondary weapon, allowing you to easily swap between weapons and match the enemy’s weakness. It’s a fluid combat system that’s simple, yet engaging.
The gameplay is the same. Very familiar, but done so well it doesn’t matter. I know I’ve mentioned Fire Emblem a thousand times, but I can’t understate the similarities here. The turn-based, grid-based, unit focused combat is almost a direct copy. The difference being the weapon triangle is switched out for a weapon/armor weakness system. Each weapon type is strong against a specific armor type, with magic being its own thing. Another big addition is an environmental element manipulation system, a lot like Divinity: Original Sins’. You can burn forests and electrocute puddles, amongst other interactions. It’s simple, but very effective. The war camp is also very similar to Three House’s Monastery. You have points to spend on interacting with your soldiers, facilities for upgrading and progression, and you are free to run around the area in third person. Â
The game contains multiple difficulty options selectable at the start of a playthrough. Its regular option poses a strong challenge to players, with there also being an option to prevent any felled ally units from participating in future battles. Enemy AI will readily round on susceptible units in range and use skills that cause status effects. There is, however, a story mode available, which is very player-friendly. The game also gives players a good number of opportunities to undo their actions should they make a mistake. While there is a hard turn limit with each battle, this acts more as a bonus element as the game provides more experience points for completing a battle more quickly, with the limit rarely becoming an active restriction.
Overall, Lost Eidolons didn’t sweep me off my feet, but it did impress me with its ambition and functionality. This game is a solid and worthy entry in your SRPG library, and I do recommend checking it out. It’s a really good effort and I enjoyed my time with this game. If you have any love for the genre, then I wager you’ll find something to appreciate about Lost Eidolons.
