May 11, 2005 - Anxiety of the Heart
“Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, But a good word makes it glad.” Proverbs 12:25
More and more Christians are going to Christian and secular therapists and psychologists to cure their depression. Numerous books are written and can be found in secular and Christian bookstores in the self-help section. However, instead of curing or helping Christians to overcome their depression, they are led to a never ending cycle of psycho-babble and cop-outs. According to Proverbs 12:25, it is anxiety in the heart that causes depression not chemical unbalances. Clear so far? Do you believe the Word of God or men?
But what causes anxiety? Let’s read a passage from the Bible:
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6 – 7)” An anxious heart or mind is one that is unguarded by Jesus Christ. We become anxious when we try to control our future and rather than pray we become anxious and worry.
Jesus told us not to worry but to pray. What good word can be given to make the heart glad? The Word of God of course. We should always speak the Word of God to each other because it is there that we will find peace and security. We know from the Word of God that our future is in His hands and He provides everything we need to live. When someone tells you that the Word of God is not practical or can’t be used to control or cure depression, give them the Word of God.
