March 28 - Waking up Thirsty
“The woman said to Him, ‘Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.’” – John 4:15
How many of us woke up in the middle of the night only to realize that we were tremendously thirsty? You can’t think of anything else when you are truly thirsty. All other cravings and desires are pushed down for the more base need of water, the desire to slate our thirst. Could you imagine a man stranded and alone in the desert, desperate to get a drink of water to stay alive, struggling with sexual temptation? There are many who are stranded in the desert of sin and struggle and don’t even know that their thirst could be satisfied with one word from the Son of God.
The woman who asked Jesus for the living water was interested in earthly water, but Jesus was referring to living water that only He could provide. She could not understand His words:
“Jesus answered and said to her, ‘Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.’” – John 4:13 – 14
Even Christians can misunderstand Jesus’ promises to make our lives abundant and full of joy. Like the woman who was looking for temporary and earthly blessings, you too may be looking to God for temporary blessings rather than eternal blessings. We, as Christians, do not have to be wealthy to serve Christ. We do not even have to be healthy to serve God. But we all need the living water to live for Christ. When we truly “hunger and thirst for righteousness” and all other desires for earthly gain have been pushed down for the spiritual hunger in our hearts, then we will be filled with the living water to abundance. It is then that true joy will bubble up in our hearts like “a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”
